PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program renewal method in a private branch exchange wherein program can be updated irrespective of operating condition of the private branch exchange. SOLUTION: In an exchange control unit 17a of a private branch exchange, two faces of a program area Aa1 and a program area Ba2 are defined in order to easily update a program. Besides, a memory area a3 for exchange control which is used for exchange control and a calling state memory area a4 which is used for controlling the state of speech or the like are installed. The program area Aa1 and the program area Ba2 are used as an operation face and a waiting face and switched by control of a system monitoring part.
