The stacking system for mail items, oriented vertically on their narrow sides, has a guide to carry them to a stacking point on an underlay against a supporting wall where they are braked. A stacking plate (5) slides on a linear guide (3,4), and supports the end of the stack on the downstream end side. Pressure is applied by the stacking plate through a wound roll spring (9) in a coil (8), with a rotation damper (6) between the rotating and fixed parts, and only activated when the spring is unwound. The damper has a freewheel, and is coupled (10) to the spring coil.
