PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable distance measuring device which can measure a distance, even in the presence of a shielding body located between two measurement points without requiring signal reflection from a point to be measured. SOLUTION: This instrument is equipped with a GPS control means 2, which outputs position information on a measurement point according to position information received from a GPS satellite; a position information storage means 3 which stores positional information from the GPS control means; a distance calculating means 5 which reads position information on two measurement points out of the position information storage means 3 and calculates the distance between them; a distance information storage means 6 which stores the distance information between the two points calculated by the distance calculating means, and a display means 7 which displays the distance between the two points read out of the distance information storage means; and can measure the distance between the two points in the absence of a reflecting body at the point to be measured without being concerned about the shielding body between the two measurement points.
