A display and processing apparatus 7 is mounted on a sailboat 1 and drives a speed transducer 9 mounted on the sailboat 1 and processes signals therefrom to determine and display the speed of the sailboat 1. The apparatus 7 includes one or more batteries and/or a solar cell 23 which is arranged to recharge a rechargeable battery 21 for powering the apparatus. The apparatus 7 supplies a pulsed power supply signal to the speed transducer 9 using power from the battery 21 and processes a periodic return signal received from the speed transducer 9 to generate a signal representative of the speed of the sailboat 1. The apparatus 7 performs temporal smoothing on the signal so generated, calculates the speed of the sailboat 1 from the smoothed signal and displays the determined speed. |
