<p>Welding apparatus operable on a workpiece 10 to be welded, comprises a welding tool 11 for melting material of the workpiece at a weld point 13, carriage means operable to create relative motion between the welding tool and the workpiece, and cooling means operable to bring a solid coolant, 15 into contact with the workpiece. The welding tool, the carriage means and the cooling means are arranged such that, in use, the contact point 19 of the solid coolant to the workpiece is located on the weld line 14 at a position that trails the weld point. The apparatus reduces welding induced distortion, and may be used to weld thin walled airframe components.</p> |
