The present invention relates to an optical switch by means of which wavelength multiplexed optical signals (.lambda. i-.lambda. n ) can be switched in an optically uninterrupted fashion through the switch. The switch is transparent to the bit rate and code format of the optical signals and comprises groups of a number (n) of tunable optical wavelength filters (39A1- 39An...39n1-39nN), preferably tunable laser amplifiers. Control means control the setting of the tunable wavelength filters as well as the settings of optical switching elements (45A-45N) so as to prevent two identical wavelengths from appearing simultaneously at the input and output links.
