PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that can effectively and safely ensure a proper operation and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 100 is provided with an optical system read unit 102 that can read a transparent original and a reflection original and selectively conduct scanning of the transparent original or of the reflection original, with a transparent original scan selection means 105 to start the transparent original scanning and with a reflection original scan selection means 106 to start the reflection original scanning. While the scanning selected by one selection means is conducted, the other selection means is deactivated and the other selection means is again validated when the reading of selected scanning is completed.
