The invention concerns a device (1) for printing and preparation of mail wherein printing data and configuration data concerning mail preparation are routed on a common communication channel (10) which feeds respectively a printer (2) and a mail preparation apparatus (4). The device comprises: communication control means (34), upstream of the common communication channel (10), which selectively transmit thereon switching commands with the flow of printing and configuration data; and switching means (11, 12) which selectively route the printing and configuration data downstream of the common communication channel towards the printer (2) or the mail preparation apparatus (4) on the basis of said switching commands. The link between the control means, the printer and the mail preparation apparatus can comply with the IEEE 1284.3 standard.
