An apparatus for providing additional processing power to a portable, wireless, communication device (100). The apparatus includes a housing (134) detachably connectable to the portable, wireless, communication device (100) and digital circuitry (136) carried by the housing (134). The digital circuitry (136) operable to assist electronic components of the portable, wireless, communication device (100) in processing digital information to increase a data rate of a wireless communication link.
