PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member made of a composite material capable of securing good thermal conductivity without sacrificing the wear resistance of the sliding face. SOLUTION: A composite matrix material 10 in which ceramics particles 3 are dispersed into a mother phase 2 of a nonferrous metal or a nonferrous alloy is obtained, thereafter, the mother phase 2 is selectively removed from the surface of the composite matrix material 10 by etching or the like to partially expose the ceramic particles 3, next, the surface of the composite matrix material 10 is subjected to light plastic working to penetrate the ceramics particle 3 remaining on the surface to the inside, and the enriching treatment including those etching and plastic working is repeatedly performed to obtain a sliding member having the enriched layer of the ceramics particles 3 excellent in wear resistance on the surface layer part. In this sliding member, the part other than the surface layer part has the relatively small content of the ceramics particles and therefore has good thermal conductivity, and the production of the composite matrix material 10 is also made easy.
