Controlling desulfurization of an exhaust gas purification device arranged in the exhaust gas tract (12) of an IC engine (10) comprises determining the amount of a sulfur-containing component of the exhaust gas from a signal produced by a sulfur-sensitive measuring device (22) arranged in the exhaust gas tract and/or in a fuel system of an IC engine; and controlling the desulfurization of the exhaust gas purification device depending on the amount of the sulfur-containing component of the exhaust gas. An Independent claim is also included for a device for controlling desulfurization of an exhaust gas purification device arranged in the exhaust gas tract of an IC engine comprising a measuring device (22) and a control device (26). Preferred Features: The exhaust gas purification device is a NOx absorber, a NOx storage catalyst, an oxidation catalyst and/or a 3-way catalyst. The duration of the desulfurization is depends on the amount of sulfur-containing component of the exhaust gas and/or an alternating lean-rich bombardment of the exhaust gas purification device during desulfurization is controlled. The sulfur-containing component is SO2 and/or H2S. A sulfur charge of the exhaust gas purification device is determined depending on the amount of sulfur-containing component of the exhaust gas upstream of the device. The duration of regeneration is controlled depending on the amount of sulfur-containing component determined during desulfurization downstream of the exhaust gas purification device.
