PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide surface treated steel excellent in weatherability and appearance uniformity, in which maintenance is made free by being covered with a stable rust layer or a rust-containing layer having protective properties over a long period, further, the same stable rust layer or rust-containing layer is formed in an early stage, and the generation of flowing rust on the surface of steel can be suppressed even in the case of being exposed to a coastal region severe in the corrosive environment. SOLUTION: In this surface treated steel, the surface of the steel is coated with a first film composed of a butyral resin containing Fe rust essentially consisting ofα-FeOOH or amorphous rust and a Zn-based compound, and preferably, the surface of the first film is coated with a second film composed of a butyral resin containing one or more selected from Mo, W and V-based compounds.
