METHOD FOR ROUTE GUIDANCE AND TERMINAL DEVICE THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct route guidance matching the condition of a terminal device, whether the terminal is left behind in a vehicle or held in a walker's hands. SOLUTION: Route guidance is provided by a navigation device 231 which is not only usable as the on-vehicle type but also portable. The navigation device 231 has communications functions by itself or it is associated with a cellular phone so that the navigation device, using the communications functions, is connectable with a service center 10 who provides a plan of a trip through a network 50 such as the Internet, to sample the plan of the trip already registered in the center or to sample and display map information which indicates a route matching the plan of the trip. The navigation device 231 has a GPS antenna, a display portion, and a group of control keys and displays different areas of a map according to whether it is in a use mode in which it is carried around by the user or in an on-vehicle use mode. Route or facility guidance is provided according to the use mode.
