PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reading apparatus that can prevent image defect due to deposition of a foreign material and surely read information described on an original. SOLUTION: The original reader has carrier rollers 18, 19 that carry an original along a carrying path 6, guide plates 16a, 16b, 17a, 17b, 17c,... that guide both sides of the original carried via the carrying path 6, light sources 22, 23 that light the original side via an opening 8 formed between the guide plates 16a, 16b, and a scanner unit 5 that reads a reflected light from the original to read information described on the original side. A transparent guide member 10 is fitted to a slope 8a of the guide plate 16b fitted to an upper end of the opening 8. The guide member 10 is fitted at a position deviated from an optical path receiving a reflected light from the original so as to prevent a defect such as missing image due to a foreign material undesirably deposited on the guide member 10.
