PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder provided with a magnetoresistance effect element hardly affected by an external magnetic field, simply constructed of a small number of parts, and capable of minimizing centering work. SOLUTION: This rotary encoder is provided with a first member 10 having an NS magnetic pole part 20 alternately magnetized with N and S polarities in a ring shape inside a case body 11 made of a magnetism shielding material and a second member 50 inserted into the first member 10 and provided with the magnetoresistance effect element 70 arranged opposedly to the NS magnetic pole part 20. When the first member 10 is turned to the second member 50, the NS magnetic pole part 20 facing the magnetoresistance effect element 70 is moved so as to vary an output of the magnetoresistance effect element 70. In the second member 50, various kinds of electric functional parts X are housed in the part inserted into the case 11. The first member 10 and the second member 50 are respectively fixed to a pair of mounting members 110, 120 centered with each other.
