PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide defective pixel correction of a high picture quality pickup capable of conducting a defective pixel correction due to increase of defective pixels caused by size reduction and pixel density increase of an image pickup element used in a video camera without increasing the circuit scale. SOLUTION: The defective pixel correction of the high picture quality pickup can be obtained without increasing the circuit scale, by correcting the defective pixels by a first defective pixel correcting circuit 4 in a detecting region output from a defective pixel detection region output circuit 3 at a picture signal output from the image pickup element 1, and correcting the defective pixels by a second defective pixel correcting circuit 6 having a means for variably setting a correcting amount smoothly in response to the distance from the detecting region in and out of the detecting region by a defective pixel correcting amount calculator 5.
