PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the height size over the entire part of a recording medium drive assembly which records and/or reproduces two kinds of media (for example, a CD and an MD) by a common optical pickup. SOLUTION: A drive unit 3 and a holder unit are arranged within a main chassis and both units are vertically moved by slide cam plates disposed at both side plates of the main chassis. The holder unit 4 has a holder 65 and holder base and the holder 65 is slidably (turnably) and liftably supported on the holder base. The holder 65 is so inclined that its rear end side declines in reproducing of the CD 13 and the drive unit 3 is arranged above this holder 65. The holder 65 ascends in a horizontal state in recording/reproducing of the MD 14 and in this state the vertical relation of the drive unit 3 and the holder 65 is inverted, by which a turntable 64 for the MD is jumped below the holder 65 to magnetic attract the MD 14.
