PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the operator of a flatbed scanner to extract the image information on an object to be read even when the operator does not make any special operation. SOLUTION: A back member 20 constituting the background face P of a lid member 19 which is constituted in an openable/closable state against a captive face is constituted in such a way that the member 20 can be exchanged freely for another one having a different color or design through a hook-and- loop fastener 22 and, at the same time, the area surrounded by the member 20 is set as a captive area by discriminating the area through pre-scanning. In addition, an extracting means which only captures the image information in the capture area through main scanning is provided.
