PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent useless printing on a print medium by detecting overlapped feeding of print medium surely before starting print operation and discharging the overlapped print medium. SOLUTION: In a printer for feeding a print medium 31 automatically from a medium containing tray 4 onto a carrying passage through rotation of a separation roller 33 and carrying the print medium to a print section 32 by means of carrying rollers 39, 40, the print section is provided with an auto-gap detecting means for detecting the distance from a preset reference position to the surface of a print medium placed on a platen 41 prior to start printing. When the difference between a distance detected by the auto-gap detecting means and the distance from the reference position to the platen deviates from the allowable range of thickness of a designated print medium, print operation is inhibited and the print medium is discharged.
