PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly activate a catalyst in warming-up by one catalytic converter, and to preclude passage resistance from being generated in traveling after the warming-up. SOLUTION: A diaphragm 2e is provided to drivide a space part 2b formed in an upstream part of a catalyst carrier 3 along an exhaust gas passage, a butterfly valve type on-off valve 5 is closed in the warming-up by the on-off the valve 5 having the rotational center in an upstream side tip part of the diaphragm 2e, of which the tip part is closed contacting with an inner wall of an upstream pipe 2a, and the substantial half of the catalyst carrier 3 is used thereby to quicken activation for the catalyst. Lowering of an output is not generated because the full zone of the catalyst carrier 3 is used by opening the on-off valve 5 after the warming-up.
