PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an organic acid anhydride, an organic acid halide, or their mixture. SOLUTION: This method comprising bringing a reaction medium into contact with a catalyst, characterized in that the reaction medium comprises at least one organic acid, a combination of the organic acid with phosgene, a combination of at least one organic acid anhydride with phosgene, or a combination of the organic acid, the organic acid anhydride, and phosgene. The reaction medium may further contain a solvent. The catalyst is a group IVB transition metal halide.
