PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thermoplastic polyester used for covering the surface of a molded article to give a hollow PET or PEN molding which can be reused in a state substantially free from mars on the surface, maintaining good transparency even when recovered and reused, with no fear of contamination of the contents, and a covering material comprising the polyester. SOLUTION: This thermoplastic polyester has a solubility satisfying the relations of formula (1): the solubility in water at 95 deg.C (wt.%) of >=10% and formula (2): the solubility in water at 30 deg.C (wt.%) of <=1% and a reduction in intrinsic viscosity due to hydrolysis satisfying the relation of formula (3): the reduction in intrinsic viscosity due to hydrolysis of <=0.01.
