PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-resolution incremental encoder. SOLUTION: The encoder 1 is provided with four detectors, and each detector creates a square-wave pulse signal which forms one period T every time a rotating shaft is rotated by a predetermined angleθand outputs it from each of A-phase to D-phase output terminals 11-14. A-phase and B-phase pulse signals and C-phase and D-phase pulse signals each have a T/4 phase difference, and A-phase and C-phase pulse signals and B-phase and D-phase pulse signals each have a T/8 phase difference. The A-phase and B-phase pulse signals and the C-phase and D-phase pulse signals are inputted to the input terminals 21 and 22 of an updown counter 2 via EXCLUSIVE OR circuits 3 and 4, respectively. The counter 2 executes up count or down count every time the counter 2 captures each edge of each pulse signal. Therefore, the angle of rotation of the rotating shaft is detected at a resolution ofθ/8 corresponding to a phase difference of T/8.
