PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treatment for rendering hazardous organic substances harmless by which time for the treatment can be shortened, and an apparatus used therefor. SOLUTION: The apparatus 10 for treatment of the present invention consists of a photo-decomposition reaction vessel 12 and a photo-catalytic reaction vessel 14, and a first light source is provided in the photo-decomposition reaction vessel 12. Exhaust gas is irradiated with an ultraviolet light containing a vacuum ultraviolet region from the first light source to decompose the hazardous organic substances in the exhaust gas. A photo-catalyst 26 and a second light source 24 are provided in the photo-catalytic reaction vessel 14 and the photo-catalyst 26 is irradiated with an ultraviolet light containing no vacuum ultraviolet region from the second light source 24, and this photo-catalyst 26 is brought into contact with the above exhaust gas to accelerate decomposition of the hazardous organic substances.
