Copolymer of acrylonitrile and N-vinylpyrrolidone, for use as membranes e.g. in separation processes, comprises specified amount of acrylonitrile monomer units and non-electrolytic water-soluble co-monomer units

A material with at least one polyacrylonitrile copolymer (I) comprises 70-95 mol% acrylonitrile monomer units and at least one non-electrolytic water-soluble co-monomer unit, showing high compatibility with blood and tissue. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) tissue cells immobilized on (I), with a marked capacity for growth and function; (b) blood in contact with (I), showing only small signs of activation in terms of coagulation, complement and cellular components such as platelets; and (c) the production of a membrane from (I) by making a solution containing 15-25 wt% (I) in a polar solvent, casting the solution on a support or extruding it through an annular die, forming an asymmetric membrane by coagulation in a bath (wet method or wet-dry-wet method) and subjecting the membrane to post-treatment with water or steam.
