The building work apparatus with a mast (3) has an accommodation device (5) for at least one worktool (17) movably guided along the mast between at least one upper cable (9) and at least one lower cable (10). A tension device provides defined tension of the upper cable and/or the lower cable. A masthead (11) is held at an upper end (13) of the mast and is pivotable between at least one work position and at least one transport position. A hydraulic cylinder (15) is linked on the one hand to the mast head and on the other hand with one end of the upper cable or the lower cable. In a first operating condition of the hydraulic cylinder the mast head is held in its work position and at the same time the upper cable or lower cable is tensioned. In a second operating condition of the hydraulic cylinder the mast head is held in its transport position.
