A method for maintaining the gap between the rotor and housing of a rotary compressor has the rotor flanked by magnets which hold the position of the rotor to within a fraction of a millimetre. The rotor can be made of ferromagnetic material or has ferromagnetic elements embedded in its structure. The magnets can be permanent magnets or electro-magnets. In the latter case the gap is monitored by a sensor incorporated into the compressor.
