<p>The edge of an image is extracted to calculate the edge information which is composed of the magnitude of the edge gradient and the gradient direction. A smoothing intensity is calculated from the brightness of a pixel. From the edge information and the smoothing intensity thus calculated, the filter information is selected. By this selected filter information, electronic data are smoothed. The filter information is preset so that the smoothing operation can be performed at a high speed by selecting proper filter information. Moreover, information within a smoothing range is set to form an elliptical shape for a large gradient and is inclined according to the direction of the gradient. Therefore, the noise in the vicinity of the edge can be eliminated concentratedly.</p> |
