PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for processing an image identification signal are provided, which records the image identification signal in a time lapse image recording and reproducing system and identifies the image identification signal with an image signal to compress and recover the image identification signal. CONSTITUTION: The starting point of an image identification signal is detected from an input image signal to compress image data starting from the image identification signal in a predetermined compression unit. The detected starting point of the image identification signal is recorded in a recording area. The starting point recorded in the recording area is detected and the image identification signal is inserted into the starting point to decode the signal.
