PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating sludges during refining of coal tar by which the amount of a produced low-grade coal tar produced by treatment of the sludges during the refining can be reduced from that of a conventional method without deteriorating the quality of the product coal tar obtained by refining the coal tar recovered from a waste gas from a coke oven. SOLUTION: This method for treating the sludges comprises successively introducing a crude coal tar obtained by cooling a coke oven gas into a stationary separator and a centrifugal separator, separating and removing the sludges contained in the crude coal tar by each of the stationary separator and the centrifugal separator and recovering the coal tar. In the method for treating the sludges during the refining of the coal tar by mixing the sludges separated by each of the stationary separator and the centrifugal separator, adding the coal tar (A) separated by the stationary separator to the resultant mixture, reducing the viscosity and further separating the sludge by the stationary separation or centrifugal separation second time, at least a part of the coal tar (C) passing through the stationary separation or centrifugal separation second time is used in place of the coal tar (A) added to the mixture.
