PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an occupant detection system capable of precisely detecting the presence and sitting state of an occupant on a seat within a vehicle with a simple structure and high reliability. SOLUTION: In the occupant detection computer 20 of this occupant detection system 10, the edge detection of the image data taken by a CCD camera 12 is performed, the edges (reference lines) corresponding to stitches 54A and 54B provided on a front passenger's seat 52 are detected from the edges within the image data. The presence and sitting state of the occupant are detected on the basis of the presence, shape (length) and position of reference lines within the image data. Since the reference lines are easily detectable without being influenced by the background, a precise occupant detection can be performed with the simple structure. Since the build and seat position of the occupant can be detected from the shape and position of the reference lines, the joint use of another sensor is dispensed with, and the reliability is also high. |
