PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the information of an object to be image-formed to any part other than light receiving parts of unit pixels across a full horizontal area according to the array of pixels. SOLUTION: In an image pickup element 1, the geometrical structures of unit pixels constituted of light receiving parts and non-light receiving parts are made the same, and horizontally adjacent two unit pixels are alternately arranged so as to be vertically inverted by 180 deg.. When each line of the same line twice read signals respectively read by line memories 3, 4 and 5 is considered as one optical line, total three optical line signals constituted of signals for two optical lines and a signal for one adjacent optical line are inputted to an interpolating circuit 6. The interpolating circuit 6 outputs a signal constituted of the number of pixels which is two times as many as the number of vertical pixels obtained by synthesizing interpolated data with the light receiving parts missing on the optical lines of the image pickup element 1.
