PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of a conventional hand scanner by which the user cannot know the exact present scanned length when a document is read using the hand- operated hand scanner and recorded on a standard-size sheet of paper. SOLUTION: As the result of movement of the hand scanner on a document, a main roller 7 is rotated and encoder pulses are outputted from an encoder section 1. Based on the interval of the pulse output, a speed monitoring section 8 calculates the speed of travel of the hand scanner. A computing section 3 counts the present number of read lines based on information from the speed monitoring section 8 and scanning density information on every scanning line. The maximum number of lines recordable determined from the size of recording paper and the scanning density is specified on a storing section 2 in advance, and a comparing section 4 compares the maximum number of lines recordable with the number of lines read from the computing section 3. When the number of lines read approaches the maximum number of lines for the paper length for the specified scanning density, a sounding section 6 such as a buzzer gives an alarming sound under control of a control section 5. Thus, the user of the hand scanner is informed that the position of end of recording on the standard-size sheet of paper is approaching.
