PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a failure of an elevator attributable to the elongation of a hoisting rope. SOLUTION: A detection probe 34 attached at a predetermined position of a compensation cable 30 connected to a lower part of an elevator car 22 and a lower part of a counterweight 24 is detected by detectors 36a and 36b installed on the elevator car 22 side of a hoistway and the counterweight 24 side of the hoistway, respectively, the elevated and lowered positions of the elevator car 22 at the detection are detected respectively, and the clearance of the compensation cable 30 is operated based thereon. The operation of the elevator is controlled by selecting either of the regular operation, the limit in the long distance traveling, the limit of the traveling speed, or the traveling stop as the operational mode of the elevator according to the clearance. A failure of the elevator attributable to the elongation of the hoisting rope 28 can be prevented thereby.
