PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element in which problems of electric short circuits of the substrate are solved and to provide a method for manufacturing that liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal element having a closed space between an upper substrate and a lower substrate and holding a liquid crystal composition and a spacer to keep the gap between the upper and lower substrates constant in the closed space, only an alignment layer is formed on the electrode on the faces of the substrates in the closed space side. The film thickness of the alignment layer is >=750Åand <1,500Å.
