PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel boring machine for excavating a tunnel with a rectangular shape in cross section, which does not excessively enlarge the width of excavation by a parent machine, and can arbitrarily change its direction by the single machine. SOLUTION: According to the tunnel boring machine K, the parent shield 10 (parent machine) having an outer shell 11 with a rectangular shape in cross section houses therein a plurality of child shields 20A and 20B (child machines) each with a rectangular shape in cross section. The child shields are arranged in the parent shield side by side in a manner being connectable together or separable from each other. Further, the separated child machines are slidable and rotatable in the outer shell.
