PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stopping a runaway reaction whereby the reaction is effectively stopped and the safety in operation of a bulk polymerization can be improved even if the reaction develops in the polymerization. SOLUTION: When the runaway reaction develops in the advanced process of bulk polymerization, a cooling medium which makes water the main ingredient and a surfactant are added with stirring a reaction system. The medium is well dispersed in and mixed with the system, the accumulated reaction heat is removed rapidly and the cause of the reaction itself is cancelled. Thus, the reaction can be stopped easily, rapidly and certainly.
