An optical distribution system is used for a signal to be transmitted at rad io frequencies, for example to mobile telephone users. High frequency (LO) and Intermediate Frequence (IF) signals are modulated onto optical supercarriers . The optical signals are distributed via an optical network to one or more remote sites. An integral mixer/detector at the remote site both mixes the signals and converts them to the electrical domain, thereby generating the R F electrical signal required for transmission. In a preferred embodiment, the mixer/detector is a Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor. |
