An olefin polymerization catalyst comprises a mixture of a subhalide of titanium and a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Specified subhalides are the dichloride, di- and tri-bromides, di-and tri-iodides, di- and tri-fluorides, the monochloride monobromide, the difluoride monochloride, the monochloride monofluoride, the monochloridedibromide, the dichloride monoiodide, and the dibromide monofluoride or mixtures having these compositions. Aluminium chloride is the specified Friedel-Crafts catalyst nitrile the preferred ortho of halide to F-C catalyst is below 5:1.ALSO:Olefins are polymerized using as catalyst a mixture of a subhalide of titanium and a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-dodecene, 2-butene, 2-pentene, 2-hexene, 2-octene, 2-methyl-1-butene, 3-methyl-1-butene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, 4-vinylcyclohexene, 2-methyl-2-isobutylene, ethylene-butadiene, ethylene-styrene and isobutylene-isoprene. Specified subhalides are the dichloride, di- and tri-bromides, di- and tri-iodides, di- and tri-fluorides, the monochloride-monobromide, the difluoridemonochloride, monochloridemonofluoride, monochloride dibromide, dichloridemonoiodide, and the dibromidemonofluoride or mixtures having these compositions. Aluminium chloride is the specified Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The molar ratio of aluminium chloride to titanium subhalide is preferably below 5 : 1. The polymerization may take place in bulk or in hydrocarbon solvents.
