PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an image display device to display images at a high speed and to realize high-quality images not to deteriorate durability in an image display device which observes small-sized image display elements having plural pixels capable of controlling illumination light according to image information as enlarged images enlarged by optical elements. SOLUTION: This device has a liquid crystal panel 4 which shifts the image display elements in correspondence to plural sub-fields constituting an image field in the about arraying surface direction of the elements and consists of a piezoelectric element 7 and a piezoelectric element drive section 12, i.e., a shift means for the image display elements. The time required for the image display element shift is set shorter than the time required for pixel switching and the image display element shift is allowed to be completed during the time from the start of the pixel switching before the end thereof. The piezoelectric element 7 is used for the image display element shift means and the pixel switching is performed in the period when the switching is not subjected to the acceleration acting during the image display element shift.
