PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for layout capable of placing a plurality of kinds of auxiliary cells in unassigned areas of a semiconductor device in conformity with its specification. SOLUTION: A processor tentatively places dummy cells or representative auxiliary cells in unassigned areas in descending size order (step 31), and calculates the number of the tentatively arranged cells and the total area for each size of the cells (step 32). The processor selects a combination of the auxiliary cells that satisfies the specification of the semiconductor device considering the number and total area of the assigned cells of each size and the total sum of the characteristics of each auxiliary cell (step 33). The processor places the auxiliary cells as per the cells determined to be assigned for each size (steps 34 and 35).
