PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device attaining a brighter transmissive display by constructing a system which gives brightness priority over contrast in transmissive displaying as a liquid crystal display device provided with a reflective display function and a transmissive display function. SOLUTION: A rear side optical retardation layer 32 comprises two optical retardation plates consisting of an optical retardation plate 32a on the rear side of a cell and an optical retardation plate 32b on the rear surface side. A retardation value Re of the optical retardation plate 32a on the rear side of the cell is selected to be a value of about (1/4+K/2) times as much as a wavelength λ of incident light from the rear surface owing to a backlight 40 (K is an integer equal to or larger than zero) and a retardation value Re of the optical retardation plate 32b on the rear surface side is selected to be a value of about (1/2+K'/2) times as much as the wavelength λ of the incident light from the rear surface owing to the backlight 40 (K' is an integer equal to or larger than zero). A product dΔn of thickness d of a liquid crystal layer 1 and optical anisotropy Δn of the liquid crystal layer 1 is selected to be a value of about (1/2+L/2) times as much as the wavelength λ of the incident light from the rear surface owing to the backlight 40 (L is an integer equal to or large than zero). |
