PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium and a method for reproducing the medium, in which the recording density can be significantly improved. SOLUTION: The medium has a recording layer which shows a normal magnetization state at room temperature and keeps the normal magnetization state, ranging from room temperature to the Curie temperature T2; a read-out layer which is disposed on the incident side of the light beam of the recording layer and which shows an in-plane magnetization state at room temperature, changes into a normal magnetization state at T1 or higher and again shows the in-plane magnetization state at T3 or higher; and an intermediate layer which is disposed between the read-out layer and the recording layer and which shows a normal magnetization state at room temperature and changes into an in-plane magnetization state at T3 or higher. The temperatures T1, T2, T3 satisfy the relation T1<T3<T2, and reproducing is performed by forming a region having a temperature of >=T1 and <T3 in the region irradiated with the reproducing light beam on the magneto-optical recording medium; and transferring the magnetization information in the recording layer to the read-out layer in that region.
