PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a meta-type aromatic polyamide fiber having good mechanical characteristics, heat resistance and the like in high productivity. SOLUTION: This method for producing the dense meta-type aromatic polyamide fiber by wet-spinning a solution of a meta-type aromatic polyamide polymer, comprising an amide-based solvent containing the meta-type aromatic polyamide consisting essentially of a metaphenylenediamineisophthalamide skeleton comprises (1) coagulating the polymer solution as a porous filament by extruding the solution into a coagulation bath holding a coagulation liquid comprising the amide-based solvent and water, (2) heating and drawing the resultant filament in air while including the coagulation liquid in the pores or allowing the pores to include a plasticizing liquid, (3) heating the resultant filament to 100-200 deg.C while including the coagulation liquid in the pores, and (4) heat- treating the heated filament at 250-400 deg.C.
