The inner member of a screening basket 14, Fig. 4, consists of a fine screen 21 permanently secured to a ring 24 and to an angle ring 27 carrying an end disc 28 of the same material. This inner member is removably secured as by bolts 26 to a further ring 20 having tapered surfaces 23, 33, Fig. 1, and having secured to it an expanded-metal screen 22. The basket may be lifted by a spring handle 41 pivoted at 38 to the ring 20 and be lowered into a cylindrical casing 11, Fig. 1, intended for insertion in a pipeline. The lower part of the ring 20 is located between a surface 37 and a circumferentiallyshort lug 35, the looped end 39 of the spring handle is engaged under a surface 40 and the free end of the handle against a surface 43. A cover 18 is then secured in place, the action of the underside 44 of the cover on the spring handle 41 serving to force the smooth circular surface 36 of a flange 25 of ring 24, Fig. 4, into contact with the circular surface 37. In Fig. 5 the inlet 75 of the casing 74 is at right angles to the outlet 49 and the basket has a diametral spring 69 whose ends 71, 72 are located in channelled projections 57, 58, and which is pressed upon by the cover 55 to effect close contact at 36. A cup 65 to collect residue is secured to the ring 24.
