The invention relates to a method for the production of acrolein or acrylic acid or the mixture thereof from propane, wherein the propane undergoes partially heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation in a first reaction step to obtain propene; at least a partial fraction of molecular hydrogen contained in the components contained in the product gas mixture and different from propene and propane is subsequently separated from the product gas mixture formed in the first reaction step and the product gas mixture is then used for the production of acrolein and/or acrylic acid by means of gas phase catalytic propylene oxidation, wherein molecular nitrogen is also used for diluting the reaction gas mixture during propylene oxidation.
