A phlebotomy device comprises a barrel (10) provided with a catheter (16) and a needle (18) passing through the catheter, means (12, 14) being provided for automatically retracting the needle from the catheter in response to the insertion of a blood collection vessel into the barrel. Preferably needle retraction is automatic. In a preferred embodiment, the retraction means comprises a flexible cord (14) linking a pusher plate (12) and the needle (18) via ventral chamber (24). In use, a collection tube (28) is inserted into the barrel and moved forwards to puncture stopper (30) by spike (20). As the tube moves forwards, it engages pusher plate (12) thus causing withdrawal of needle (18) into catheter (16). |
