PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a difference in levels of signals as a defect of a linear image sensor in a left and right separate reading system. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with the linear image sensor (208) to output image signals of each area divided into plural ones of a light receiving pixel string from separate output terminals, plural signal processing means (1 to 8) to perform prescribed signal processings to the outputted image signals, a reference white board (210), a reference density member (701) having prescribed density of halftone, an adjustment data acquiring means (20) to make the levels of the image signals when the reference white board is read approximately coincide with the first prescribed level, to make the levels of the image signals when the reference density member is read approximately coincide with the second prescribed level and to adjust the levels of the image signals corresponding to density except the ones of reference white board and the reference density member to the level to be obtained by interpolating the first and second prescribed levels and adjusting means (13 to 16) to adjust the image signals by using the adjustment data.
