PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of satisfactorily reading image information of an original without causing scale increase and complication of a device and to provide an image forming device using the image reader and capable of suppressing consumption of useless toner. SOLUTION: A copying machine 100 adopting a flat bed type original platen glass 14 and a contact transfer system transfer member (transfer roller) 3 incorporates a low light intensity optical unit 18 as an original exposure device. Generation of stain on the rear side due to the stain of the transfer member of a non paper passing part and generation of defective transfer after long-term use are prevented and the life of the transfer roller is prolonged by recognizing a non-original part as a white image when the amount of exposure of the original is equal to below the light intensity (for example, 2,000 lux) of external light on the original platen glass.
