PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the processing time on the reproducing side when encoding a multi-channel sound signal at a variable compression rate. SOLUTION: Prediction circuits 13D1, 13D2, and 15D1 to 15D4 and buffer and selectors 14D1, 14D2, and 16D1 to 16D4 perform predictive encoding of a 6-channel sound signal. A DTS generator 17 generates decoding time stamp information indicating the read timing of compressed data in an input buffer 22a on the decoding side in accordance with the predictive encoding data volume of each channel, and a formatting circuit 19 formats user data which includes a packet header including decoding time stamp information and compressed data into a packet and this formatted data is transmitted via a communication line. |
